Why Star Performers Negotiate their Work.
Brendon Burchard in his book High Performance Habits reminds us: “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
High performers aren’t just busy—they’re intentional. They produce output that’s deeply valued in their domain. It’s not just volume for volume’s sake.
This shows up in two ways.
They co-design their role by negotiating their responsibilities to take advantage of their special experience, knowledge, and skills. When they cooperatively design their responsibilities to emphasize what they do best, they are stacking the odds in their favor.
They prioritize ruthlessly to protect their high-value work. When in doubt, they unpack competing priorities to assure that a low-value responsibility isn’t crowding out a high-value responsibility.
Most people inherit their responsibilities.
Star performers design them.
